October 2011
It has been awhile since I sent an
update, so here goes.
On July 4th, the base participated in the
Temecula 4th of July parade. 2 weeks later was the annual
Joint Sub Vets picnic at Sub Base San Diego. Trieste base
had a great turnout, 21 members attended. For those of you
who missed the picnic there were members from San Diego
Base, Scamp Base and Sub Vets of WWII. Great food, Great
times and priceless memories. This joint picnic also
coincides with the anniversary of the charter of Trieste
Base. This year, 2011, marked the 3rd year anniversary for
Trieste Base.
September 5, the Base participated in the
Norco Labor Day parade. This is turning out to be a great
parade to participate in. It now ranks up there with the
Temecula and Murrieta parades. Our parade entry was very
popular and drew a lot of positive attention and applause.
October will be a busy month.
October 1 is the Scamp Base food fest. This will be held at
the American Legion hall in Escondido, 230 East Park Ave.
starts at 1200, and price is just whatever you donate. If
you have never been, I strongly urge you to try to attend.
Good food is provided.
On October 8 is the Trieste Base picnic
at the Duck Pond in Temecula. Picnic starts at 0900 and runs
until 1500. Food (finger type, 1 ea) and beverage (soda and
water) will be provided. If you require any other libations,
it will be a BYOB. Howard has volunteered to homestead the
cabana for our group.
Our October meeting will be on the 16th.
Location will be Carrows Restaurant in Murrieta. Meeting
starts at 1300. In addition, it is that time of the
year for the base to start selling flags for the Field of
Honor. Remember that each flag sold nets the base $10.
Almost like free money.
In November will be the Murrieta Veterans
Day parade that the base has marched in for the last 3
years. After the parade this year, the City of Murrieta will
be unveiling and dedicating Korean War Wall portion of the
Veterans Memorial at Town Square Park. Also, base
elections are coming up. We have nominees for the position
of Base Commander and Vice Commander. Still need people to
step forward for the position of Base Secretary and
Treasurer. Look if I can do it anyone can hold any office. I
was just a dumb snipe. So please consider stepping up and
supporting the base.
We now have 47 members in the base.
Please join me in welcoming Jonathan Greenert into the base.
Jon is still an active duty submariner. I don’t know how
many meetings or events he will be able to attend but I have
extended an open invitation to him to drop by anytime his
duties bring him into the area.
Again, I would like to thank each one of
you for your efforts and involvement in the base, whether it
is just able to support the base by attending meetings or
volunteering your time to march in a parade or holding base
office. I salute you and you have my heartfelt thanks.
Greetings All,
Fraternally yours,
